Chet Doyle is one of my heroes...in his early 70's, he started running in earnest when in his early 50's. Over 30 marathons later, his running philosophy consists of "don't run fast enough to get hurt." He has a good sense of humor too, given the photo at left.
Interestingly, Chet was a certified fitness instructor during a career in the US Army and reserves spanning over 30 years. At this link, find Chet's thoughts on strength training, and how essential it is to being a successful runner. The proof is in the pudding. Some of my favorite quotes below.
"Rest is very important. Don't get over tired."
"limit your time...to not more than an hour and half per session...That starts with you sitting slack jawed on your butt on the couch, through driving to the gym, changing clothes, exercising, showering, changing clothes back, driving back home, and ends with you sitting back on the couch on your butt with your jaw once again slack."
"That's why it is called a 'Workout'...if it were fun, Disney would be selling tickets at each weight machine"
